One of staples of Tae Kwon Do is Forms practice. Long ago, Forms (poomse) were developed to assist a warrior in the practice of defensive and offensive skills without causing injury or death to actual opponents. You might think of them as choreographed fight sequences with multiple imaginary opponents. At each belt level, a student learns a new Form that teaches techniques that are new to that level, as well as reinforces more basic techniques already learned.
Poomses were developed by the founder of Tae Kwon Do as the martial art was officially given it's name. These Forms are indeed part of the thick deep roots of Tae Kwon Do. They are practiced over and over until they become a permanent part of the practitioner. There are 24 Forms representing 24 hours in a day, or as the founder of Tae Kwon Do would explain, "all my life".
